What qualities do you display?
Quizno's Subs has discontinued their Meatball Sandwich. I know - I am floored as well! I found out when my wife and I grabbed a quick bite before a movie...and lo and behold - NO MEATBALL SANDWICH on the menu anymore! According to the manager, "Yeah, they've discontinued it." Riveting quote.
Blasphemous! How do you drop the meatball sub? Who do they think they are -- Quizno's?
According to the manager, they dropped the Meatball because the menu is going in a different direction, and besides, "Everyone has a meatball sub." It wasn't doing anything special for them.
Okay, I am heart-broken over the decision - but I respect their choice - and it got me thinking...
What can I drop off my menu?
You know...we all have our menus...the qualities we carry around with us that we feel define us. But, not everything we carry around with us is necessarily doing anything good for us - in fact, a lot of these ideas only hold us back.
When you think about it, the perception you have of yourself and others is solely based on past experiences. Since I, Travis, have consistently displayed moments of impatience in the past - I therefore must be IMPATIENT!
Put it on the menu.
That's what we do. We gather up all of our past experiences - throw them on our menu board - and walk around displaying it for everyone to see.
"Hey, here comes impatient Travis."
"There goes cranky Janet."
"Good morning Doug the victim."
So, we spend our lives acting out qualities based on "who we were," instead of focusing on "who do I want to be right now?"
Right?
Right now, as I type this, I am not impatient. I can make the conscious choice this very moment to put up different qualities on my menu board - and then all I need to do is act them out.
So, welcome to Travis! Today's special is: PATIENCE, JOY, COMPASSION, COURAGE, & LOVE. Side items include: GRACE, PEACE, and your choice of GRATITUDE or KINDNESS. For dessert, as always, a nice slice of HUMBLE pie!
Why not?
As you read this right now - you have the choice to drop those meatballs off your menu - and create the menu you want others to see and feel.
One step at a time - one moment at a time - one response at a time.
Eckhart Tolle in the Power of Now writes, "Your outer journey may contain a million steps; your inner journey has only one; the step you are taking right now."
Mary Baker Eddy expanded this concept of "nowness" into all aspects of life - even health. She writes, "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,--neither in nor of matter,--and the body will then utter no complaints."
Take this single moment - right now - and arrange your menu board for the rest of the day. Who do you want to be right now? Write the qualities down. Take them with you all day. Stick with it!
Remember, don't forget to drop the meatballs!
Much love,
Travis
