"Letting your light shine is a HUGE part of why we exist - to live the expression of divine Love."

Recently I heard Maya Angelou, famous author and poet, speak at the Massachusetts Women’s Conference. She is a powerful and vibrant woman. What a breath of fresh air and inspiration.

She spoke with passion, love and great energy for about 45 minutes. What I took away from her talk was the power of light. Her main message was to, “let [your] light shine without discrimination.” You can tell this is a woman who lives that idea every moment.

She told stories
about how in the midst of hate and segregation she saw lights (that each of us has) shining on those of different ethnicity. She spoke about her crippled uncle who despite his physical challenges and segregation in the US was a loving support to children of deaf and blind parents who were of a different ethnicity. You could tell this humble man really made a difference in many people’s lives – he lived without boundaries.

In another story she illustrated how we can defend others and care for others (without boundaries). She stood up for 2 young adults who seemed to be without a place to stay in Paris. She saw them on the street resting in front of a store front in the very early morning. Someone from the store came out and literally spat on the young people. She went right over and told the store employee that action was unacceptable – that these children were his brethren. While he didn’t understand her English, he no doubt got the message.

You could tell she lives her life without boundaries or borders – she doesn’t let anything stop her from shining her light on as many as she can. What an important message that is. She said we have the strength to lift up someone.

I think letting your light shine is a HUGE part of why we exist - to live the expression of divine Love.

She also made another point that I cherish – how we need to be grateful for the light that is shining on us from others. That idea really opens your eyes to gratitude instead of limitation and lack and fear and selfishness. She said, “thank as many people as possible because they shed light on you.”

I connected with this message because I believe that God is the source of all life, and all love. And that being the case we are truly sisters and brothers and there can be no boundaries to separate or divide us. What a great foundation to live your life on!
