What is my value? PDF Print E-mail

Spirituality is the coin of the realm.

I know many people who are self-employed (like me) that think about their value quite a bit. How do you see yourself and what value do you put on yourself, your talents, your work?

It can be a tough subject for some - including me. My whole career I have been employed by someone else - happily working very hard and earning my paycheck. And I know that during that time I did identify my value with salary and with my position.

I never really thought about it until I believe God said it was time for me to leap into self-employment. In some ways it can feel like jumping off a cliff (and I hate heights). I can admit to you, fellow spiritual seeker, that I still struggle with understanding my value, my worth and my financials. It is a sticky ball of wax.

I find the key when I fall into a pit (that place where dark thoughts live and pull you in and it seems hard to climb out of) to start thinking about Spirit and my relationship to this higher power. I think about how Spirit animates me and moves me into my right action and right interaction. I think about the tenderness of Spirit who sufficiently cares for me where ever I am and always values my expression of spirituality. And being valued by Spirit - what could be better? That is much higher than dollars and cents.

This is what I figure: if I am made by Spirit, God, then I have some of the talents of that Creator - I include qualities that Spirit has - just on a smaller scale. On my scale Spirit is gigantic and while I'm smaller, I am still the reflection of Spirit. Isn't the offspring an image of the parent? Makes sense to me. (I didn't just come up with this entire premise -- I did pick it up from reading the book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by MB Eddy.) Then I consider that Spirit must think of me as valuable - because it is important that I express Spirit, Principle, Love and Truth (that reflection work).

If that is my truest work then I am always valuable and always needed. And that is the kind of employment that is always steady and is always valued. When I'm able to re-connect to Spirit with thoughts about what is my constant value (and not one that rises and falls and is tied to money) it helps me get beyond the little material issues and think about the present power of Spirit. And that uplifts my thought, my outlook and helps me re-ground myself in God's plan and find my value and identity through that (more permanent) lens.
