Elizabeth Lesser on Creating Your Best Life
An Interview by Mary Ann Brussat

Elizabeth Lesser, the newest addition to our Living Spiritual Teachers Project, has been tracking spiritual movements in America since she cofounded the Omega Institute more than 30 years ago. She's a true spiritual adventurer with a knack for explaining complex concepts in terms that make them applicable to the kinds of things we encounter every day.

Beginning on January 5, Oprah Winfrey is kicking off the New Year with a two-week special event called the "Best Life Series," and Lesser is the spirituality teacher for "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "Oprah & Friends Radio," and a "Spirituality 101" webcast. We had an opportunity to pose some of our own questions to Elizabeth about what makes for the best life.

The Most Spiritually Literate Films of 2008

We've looked back at all the films we've reviewed for Spirituality & Practice during the year to create our own version of the critic's best list. We've identified the films that have enriched our spiritual journeys, given us new perspectives on the people and the world around us, engaged our imaginations, and pointed the way to transformation. These are spiritually literate films that reflect the 37 practices featured on this website.

Our lists this year include a new category: The Five Most Spiritually Literate Animated Films. Some amazing things are happening in this genre, and it is no longer limited to children's fare. We congratulate the producers, directors, writers, actors, and everyone else who contributed to the 45 most spiritually literate films of 2008.

Best Spiritual Books of 2008

Every year from the more than 300 books we have reviewed on this website, we choose 50 "best spiritual books." These are the titles that have most impressed and inspired us, and since we only review books that we want to recommend to you for your spiritual journey, this selection actually represents the best of the best.

We are pleased to announce our selections for 2008. Through diverse approaches, drawing upon the wisdom and practices of the world's religions, these titles explore the quest for meaning and purpose, wholeness and healing, commitment and community, contemplation and social activism. We congratulate the authors and publishers of these exceptional contributions to today's spiritual renaissance.

Next E-Course: Practicing Spirituality with the World's Religions

Our next e-course will explore the teachings of the major world religions with an emphasis on the practices they share in common. For 40 days beginnning on January 5, 2009, participants will receive an early morning email with a passage from a contemporary spiritual teacher and a suggestion for how to practice that thought during the day; there will also be an online Practice Circle for sharing reactions and experiences with the practices.

Shadow on DVD

Spiritual Literacy: Reading the Sacred in Everyday Life is a six-DVD series containing 26 half-hour episodes on qualities of the spiritual life. The episode on the spiritual practice of "Shadow" includes a retelling of the story of St. Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio. The saint and lover of animals advised a city that was fearful of the wolf in their midst, a representative of their shadow side, to feed it. When they did, the wolf's killing stopped.
