Spirit on 9-11 - 2006/09/12 20:08
What was the topic of discussion on 9-11 where you were in or out of work?...Certainly the impact of 9-11 left a "forever" mark on each of us in our country...The ripples felt are on a never-ending sea...On that evening, I was speaking at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greenwood, S.C. After the event, a lady by the name of Ann Coker came up to me and suggested that I send some of my writings to President Bush...I did so after I arrived home on 9-11...From that comment, I felt drawn to send 4 poems to our nation's leader...I did send the following poem that I will share with you here...It is a poem about a young soldier by the name of Brian...I have 2 young sons; and as a mother, I was inspired as tears flowed from my eyes and my heart when I read the email and saw the pictures sent to me in that email...So "But for the Grace of God" was birthed...It is my prayer that it touches your soul...
But for the Grace of God
But for the grace of God I could be the one Who awaits their son's return -- But for the grace of God It could be to see my son I do daily yearn -- But for the grace of God I could be the one who wonders Is my son okay -- But for the grace of God My son could be the one In that foreign land Oh so far away -- But for the grace of God I could question in my soul Is he hurting or wandering In the pitted-black night -- But of the grace of God My son too could be required For our country to daily fight -- But for the grace of God I could ask myself Is he firing guns And even being fired upon -- But for the grace of God I could be grieving and singing Death's song -- But for the grace of God I could be wondering Will he sleep well tonight And will he be dreaming With quiet-time free Of shots of terror in the night - But for the grace of God I could be wondering What will become of my son And will he even return Into my sight -- But for the grace of God It could be my son Instead of Brian Forced to take up a gun... From the innocence of boyhood To manhood there came A war upon the scene Which has created for young men Like Brian a purpose I feel sure they would not Have chosen within their life's scheme -- But for the grace of God Brian could be my son -- He too is the reason That I pray each day And seek peace Beneath the beaming sun -- But for the grace of God My son too could be In harm's way And it is for Brian My soul does ache And for him I do Solemnly pray -- I pray for his safety And peace within A joy to come tomorrow And this war to end -- I pray for him As I would my son Were he in harm's way And I will continue To seek God's protection Each and every day And for Brian and all others Who fight for America I do and will continue To ardently pray...
If you were at work, at home, or somewhere else, perhaps these were some of your thoughts...Some of us are here in our country while others serve in order that we may be free...I am an American citizen am very grateful for those who fulfill their duty and protect us daily from harm's way...
Blessings to you now and always, Juanita Pittman-Brown
