Meditation Space At Work - 2006/04/21 20:16
Our company is in process of a site rennovation and I made a proposal that we dedicate a space for Quiet/Meditation and they let me know they will be including it in their plans.
This is very exciting and something I had proposed before, but they weren't able due to space constraints.
What I was hoping to find out if anyone works for a company that has dedicated meditation space and if so, could you share with me how it is appointed/decorated, what are the benefits you have seen from having dedicated space, or anything else you might be able to share with me on the topic would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Joyce Orecchia

Re:Meditation Space At Work - 2006/04/21 21:11 I used to work at a place that had "quiet" rooms on every floor, with a couch-like bench, a desk, a desk lamp, and lots pillows and a comfy blanket. People would use it not only for prayer or meditation, but also for private phoning (we had an open office arrangement) or for sensitive meetings. Or even to just kick back with a friend, as long as no one else wanted to use it. I even brought my entire staff in there once for a meeting, which made for a cozy conversation!

Anyway, I always found it very helpful to know it was there for me when I needed it. And I definitely used it to pray when things got rough.

I liked that it was a small enough room that one person could use it and not feel like they were hogging the space. but it was also big enough for small meetings.

What I've never liked is open rooms with kiosks or something where several people might be thinking or praying or whatever. That's just weird.

So I'd recommend having many small rooms spaced throughout a company rather than one big room that people had to walk too far to get to.

Re:Meditation Space At Work - 2006/04/24 21:49 Thanks for sharing your experience, this is helpful. I was also wondering if there was a guideline communicated to the employees or something posted by the room. The point about people not having to walk far is a good one too, and worth asking about if we have extra space to accommodate it. This space will be dedicated to just Quiet, no meetings, and there may be a time when someone may be meditating and someone else may come in also. I was thinking creating a serene ambiance is important and am also looking for ideas on how other Meditation or Quiet rooms are set-up, so your suggestions were also helpful.
