tasteless comments - 2006/08/23 02:15 Hi! I have a dilemma.... I'm in this professional group that meets once a week, and I really like it. It's helped my business a lot.

It's just that the men in the group (I'm female) sometimes use tasteless humor to get a laugh. I mean the stuff that makes you think of body parts or functions. It's like locker room stuff. And then the women roll their eyes and the guys act all like we're being stuffy.

What to do about this? Why do guys do that?

Re: tasteless comments - 2006/08/23 21:22 Yes, you can do something about it. #1 – pray. “Our Father...” You all have the same Father. That makes you all thoughtful and caring brothers and sisters, not just immature animals.

I suggest some affirmations. They may sound Pollyannaish, but trust me, they work, because you are not WISHING them to be true. They ARE true right now, even if you don't see evidence of their truth yet.
- We all are mature, thoughtful individuals.
- We all act respectfully of each other.
- Everyone is already mature and intelligent. No one is left out of total intelligence.
- We all have fun in ways that are truly fun for all.

Professional behavior in a workplace typifies the most intelligent and least personality-based actions. This is what you are demanding with these affirmations. Stick to these truths and you will soon see them as actual actions at work.

Keep up the good work.

Re:tasteless comments - 2006/08/23 23:29 This should take care of the problem:
Get a few - 6-8 women in the group to go along with you on this. At the next meeting...somewhere appropriate...stand up and blow a whistle...this is a signal to all the females to pull out curling irons, lipstick, brushes, compacts etc. all the stuff of femaleness...proceed to primp for an appropriate time...blow the whistle and put everything away and proceed as if nothing has happened...if they don't get it...do it again at the next meeting...

Re: tasteless comments - 2006/08/24 13:11 thanks for this Sew, this is very helpful. it's so hard to think of them as mature, but you're reminding me to see beyond what's in front of me. I'll try it this week.

has anyone else had to deal with this?

Re: tasteless comments - 2006/08/24 19:39 Glad those ideas helped. I know you can see past the bad that seems to be.

Anything less than perfect is only an illusion. We don't have to change your co-workers into good. All these affirmations are doing is reminding you of the good that always has been true. The better you hold on to the good, the more good you'll see.

Have a great week, and let us know how it goes.

Love,
Sew
