Re:Love lifts spirits and saves the day - 2006/09/01 08:52
When I worked at a Kinko's I met people all the time who needed a boost. One day a grandmother came in with 2 grandkids, gingerly carrying a towel and she was all upset. She had taken the kids out of school to spend a special day with grandma at the beach. While there the wind picked up her grandson's homework and deposited it in the water. By the time they got it out, it was in shreds. She had the pieces carefully wrapped in the towel. She unwrapped them and it did look pretty hopeless.
I didn't know if I could save the wet and tattered papers, but I knew I could save her drenched spirits, just by loving her. Her motive had been love. There was no reason for her to suffer. No need to make her fearful by discussing how hopeless this endeavor was. I was also careful not to call attention to ourselves because I didn't want others voicing their opinions about the futility of our success.
I got right to work piecing the papers back together. As I worked it turned out to be less hopeless that it originally looked. Only one small part of one sheet turned out to be missing. I then made a copy of the pieced together sheets. It really did turn out amazingly good. You would never suspect that they were in about 50 pieces.
Grandma was so pleased she called me an angel and suggested to her grandson that he write a paper for school entitled, "The day we met an angel at Kinko's". She took the new copies and the shreds with her to show his teacher what I had done.
That day, Love not only lifted her spirits but also saved her getting in trouble with the boy's mom, saved the boy's homework, and made Grandma's day. And it gave me this great story to tell. Pretty good day's work for Love, I'd say.
